Yvirá’s New Fruits

Is learning two languages too early a problem? Can we learn a second language as adults? What are the advantages of speaking more than one language?

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2025 | Nº3

Dear readers,

YVIRÁ reaches its third edition with new fruits on science for education. To begin, we interviewed Rebeca Otero, coordinator of the UNESCO Education Sector in Brazil, who tells us about important initiatives such as the EducaStem2030 project. The idea is to increase female participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. Rebeca also addresses various topics and challenges in our education, such as school dropout rates, teacher training and the use of technology for pedagogical purposes, and points out ways for the country to integrate into a global context seeking solutions.

Is learning two languages too early a problem? Can we learn a second language as adults? What are the advantages of speaking more than one language?

The question that motivated “What about?” section concerns so-called concept maps. Do they really work? How can they be used to benefit teachers and students? We spoke with those who study and apply these maps to answer our questions. Readers will also find a valuable report in the “Worth noting” section about a project that got students (and teachers!) out of their seats. The initiative focuses on incorporating physical activity into children’s learning activities, thereby increasing engagement and combating sedentarism.

The article on bilingualism is also special. After all, is learning two languages too early a hindrance? Can we learn a second language as adults? What are the advantages of speaking more than one language? Come learn all about it! Finally, in the “Break” section, we present a review of a recently released book on research conducted in Brazil related to essential aspects of early childhood. In particular, the impacts of poverty early in life and its repercussions later. The book also offers guidance for increased investment and education during this critical stage of life.

We hope you enjoy reading it!
