Dear readers,
This second issue of YVIRÁ is unmissable. We begin with a courageous and critical interview with linguist Leonor Scliar-Cabral, who, at the age of 96, with great dedication to education, points out the paths and missteps of literacy. Why do we have so many functional illiterates? What has gone wrong so far?
In addition, two articles stand out in the section “Proof or dare”. One of them addresses the “virtuous side” of artificial intelligence in its interface with education, written by computer scientist Edmundo de Souza e Silva. We must seize the opportunities created by this tool that has changed the world. The second article in “Proof or dare” was written by economist Naercio Menezes, and discusses why public education policies have not worked in Brazil.
But we have more in YVIRÁ: the “Break” section reviews a book of utmost relevance for our reflection: “The Power of Making Thinking Visible”. And there’s more! The “What about?” section answers questions proposed by educators about how educational research can be critically consumed by those who are “on the school grounds”. And the “Worth noting” section listens to teachers’ testimonies about one of the most virtuous initiatives in Brazil to motivate students for science: the Math Olympiad (OBMEP).
